Virtual ER to support Physician Shortage at Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre

October 27, 2021

Central Health is experiencing a temporary physician shortage from 8:00pm to 8:00am on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre (BVPHC) in Baie Verte. With the support of our current Physician Lead, and the collaborative health team, the following services will continue to be offered at the facility:

  • Emergency

  • Acute Care (inpatient)

  • Medical Clinic (doctor’s office)

  • Lab

  • Medical Imaging

  • Continuing Care (Community Nursing)

  • Physiotherapy

  • Dietitian

  • Diabetes/Well Women’s Clinic

If residents require emergency services during this time, they are advised to call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room where they will be seen. During this time, individuals presenting to the BVPHC may be assessed through a virtual emergency room service. For more on Virtual ERs please click here.

How Virtual ER works

In many respects, a Virtual ER operates the same as a traditional Emergency Room.

  • A patient requiring Emergency Services would present to the healthcare site.

  • The patient will be seen and assessed by the local healthcare team, this could include a Registered Nurse and or Nurse Practitioner, and either an Advanced Care Paramedic and/or a Respiratory Therapist.

  • The patient will be assessed by a physician virtually and managed with the support of the team on the ground.

  • As required, patients would be transported to the nearest Category A Hospital – Grand Falls-Windsor or Gander –to further manage their needs.

The Regional Health Authority continues to be proactive in its search to find physician support for BVPHC. Central Health continues its efforts in recruitment for this area for both physicians and non-physician healthcare workers. Central Health has been engaging physicians directly about potential opportunities and is working with an international recruitment firm to assist in its search for physicians.

Central Health apologizes for any inconvenience and thanks you for your patience.
